The lymphatic system, which acts as a purifying and drainage system for the body, is put under strain when the body is injured, unhealthy or just out of balance. Waste products cannot be filtered out quickly enough and build up, causing swelling at the site of injury or around the lymph nodes.

The lymphatic system consists of a network of vessels branching throughout the body, which can be compared to the circulatory system. However, unlike the circulatory system, there is no central pump (the heart) to propel the fluid through the network and its movements depend on the compression from the surrounding muscles and general activity of the body. Therefore, exercise and massage with detoxifying essential oils can help to stimulate the lymphatic system.

Lymphatic Massage is a type of massage which is light in touch and slow in movement helping to move the lymph flow. Poor muscle tone, sedentary work or jobs which involve prolonged standing are all factors which decrease the efficiency of the lymph flow. As well as helping in the drainage of tissue fluid within the lymphatic system, this type of massage can be of benefit in fighting infection. Cellulite can also be helped by Lymphatic Massage which is caused when there if poor circulation and a sluggish lymph system.

However, massage alone will not successfully treat these above conditions without consideration to the diet and lifestyle. Advice is given as to how changes can benefit the lymphatic system.
